Our Children :: social issues

Our Children My Testimony and Message to America and the World Hi my Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, past and now . . . It was the year 1986 and the long stretch of June when my life was perpetually changed. The Kentucky Court System condemned me to 25 years and life, which implies that I should serve 25 years in jail before I can be considered for parole on a lifelong incarceration. I was indicted on murder and theft allegations and this was my first opportunity approaching to jail. I do acknowledge full duty regarding my wrongdoings. One night alone in my cell, I started to scan myself and request kindness, and I apologized for the sake of Jesus Christ and turned out to be superbly and greatly pardoned and spared. So be it! Today my fantasy, vision, and objective is to escape jail and travel everywhere throughout the United States of America and the world. I might want to lecture in the houses of worship and talk in the adolescent places and educational systems to address the difficult we face in this evil world. â€Å"I stood by quietly for the Lord and he slanted unto me, and heard my cry.† â€Å"He brought me up likewise out of a shocking pit, out of the grimy mud and set my feet upon a stone and set up my goings.† â€Å"And he hath put another melody in my mouth, even acclaim unto our God and I have tranquility and love in my heart today for the sake of Jesus Christ.† HALLELUJAH! Recognition His Holy Name! As we as a whole know, life accompanies hardships and they will in general test our inward quality. I am committed to set self aside and do God’s will today in America and the World. It isn't about Brother Jones and his circumstance, it’s about our youngsters. They need our affection and backing since we have such a significant number of youngsters coming to jail today and the jail framework in America isn't the solution for our kids. They ought not need to venture to every part of a similar street that I have voyage and it is significant that we address and capture this issue. Let me talk quickly about the jail framework and the laws that have been administered over the previous decade or if nothing else as long as I have been in jail doing time with Jesus Christ.

The Iranian Revolution - 732 Words

Longevity and positive outcomes are what determine whether a revolution is successful or not. This is not the case for Iran. Since the revolution, Iran has been economically, politically, and socially unstable. With an economy dependent on oil, a natural source whose production is unpredictable, stability is simply unattainable. With the same leader for a long period of time, not much can change politically. Oppositions and revolts can happen and disrupt the social lives of Iranian citizens. Although the Iranian Revolution was politically successful by maintaining an Islamic Republic, the revolution was unsuccessful because of the severe economic failure it was in the long term and the social unrest it still has today. The revolution of 1979 marked the beginning of Iran’s economic decay and even further economic instability. Before the revolution, Iran had one of the Middle East’s most advanced economies. Petroleum exports, which make up about 85 percent of government revenues, have decreased over the years after the revolution (Trading Economics). In fact, petroleum exports declined to 1.5 million barrels per day in 2012 from 2.5 million barrels per day in 2011 (Trading Economics). The Iranian government’s dependence on oil revenues has resulted in persistent financial instability. Because of this financial instability, Iran’s inflation rate was greatly affected. How to Write Papers for Graduate School

Graduate study is all about writing, as the thesis or dissertation is the ticket to graduation. However, lots of writing occurs well before the thesis and dissertation are begun. Most graduate courses require students to write term papers. Many beginning graduate students are accustomed to writing papers and approach them in ways similar to undergraduate papers. As students advance and near the end of their coursework, they often look ahead towards the next task (such as preparing for comprehensive exams) and may begin to resent writing papers, feeling that they have already proven themselves as competent students. Both of these approaches are misguided. Papers are your opportunity to advance your own scholarly work and receive guidance to enhance your competence. Take Advantage of Term Papers How do you take advantage of papers? Be thoughtful. Choose your topic carefully. Each paper you write should do double duty — complete a course requirement and further your own development. Your paper topic should meet the course requirements, but it should also relate to your own scholarly interests. Review an area of literature related to your interests. Or you might examine a topic that you are interested in but unsure whether it is complex enough to study for your dissertation. Writing a term paper about the topic will help you determine if the topic is broad and deep enough to fulfill a large project and will also help you determine if it will sustain your interest. Term papers offer a place for you to test ideas but also to make progress on your current research interests. Double Duty Each assignment you write should do double duty: help you advance your own scholarly agenda and get feedback from a faculty member. Papers are opportunities to get feedback about your ideas and writing style. Faculty can help you improve your writing and help you learn how to think like a scholar. Take advantage of this opportunity and dont simply seek to finish. That said, take care in how you plan and construct your papers. Attend to ethical guidelines of writing. Writing the same paper over and over or submitting the same paper for more than one assignment is unethical and will get you into a great deal of trouble. Instead, the ethical approach is to use each paper as an opportunity to fill in a gap in your knowledge. Consider a student in developmental psychology who is interested in adolescents who engage in risky behaviors such as drinking and drug use. While enrolled in a course in neuroscience, the student might examine how brain development influences risky behavior. In a course on cognitive development, the student might examine the role of cognition in risky behavior. A personality course might push the student to look at personality characteristics that influence risk behavior. In this way, the student advances his or her scholarly knowledge while completing course requirements. The student, therefore, should be examining multiple aspects of his or her general research topic. Will this work for you? At least some of the time. It will be better in some courses than others, but, regardless, it is worth a try.

Through a combination of reputation, humor , and well-documented facts, Sir Ken Robinson highlights the problems with today’s educational system and offers reasonable solutions. Sir Robinson grabs the audience’s attention by using humor. He points out cultural stereotypes and disproves them: the British are not reserved because they aggressively invade other countries; Americans understand irony because they named an education bill No Child Left Behind that leaves millions behind (0:36 – 1:05). Dr Faustus Essay Research Paper Repentance Dr free essay sample

Dr. Faustus Essay, Research Paper Repentance, Dr. Faustus # 8217 ; Last Opportunity For Redemption It can be argued that Doctor Faustus is damned from the minute of construct. Faustus is a adult male who does non follow to any set of moral codifications or to any one faith. This raises the inquiry of whether penitence is so acceptable or even gettable by Faustus. I would reason that it is non. Doctor Faustus asks for more than was deliberately made to him through God? s program, yet it was God? s gift to him of his mind that tempted Faustus to seek beyond his appointive kingdom of cognition. Faustus sells his psyche for what he believes to be illimitable power, with full cognition as to the effects of such a dealing. He knows the bets of his gamble with the Satan. Faustus? extended instruction and cultural environment had surely alerted him as to the dangers associated with sorcery and Lucifer. We will write a custom essay sample on Dr Faustus Essay Research Paper Repentance Dr or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Ironically, Faustus denies the being of everything. His eventual anguish in snake pit, the cogency behind Mephastophilis? description of snake pit, his ain at hand damnation if he does non atone, etc. He alienates himself from work forces, society and the universe. The lone facet of his life which he does non deny, is his present physical world. Faustus asks Mephastophilis about the celestial spheres, its intent, and the powers of God and Lucifer. However, the reply to these inquiries are non found through Mephastophilis, as these are inquiries of religion. A modern adult male like Faustus can non have replies to inquiries like this, as he is unable to understand the constructs behind them. Faustus realizes this when he is met with the insufficiency of Mephastophilis replies, which consist of him entirely stating: ? that a adult male can be saved by religion entirely? . Faustus realizes that the treaty with Lucifer fails to fulfill the power of conquering and omnipotence that Faustus had originally sought to derive. Faustus is reminded of what he has alienated himself from, viz. the Christian religion. He begins to see the mistake in his ways. This consequences in a series of efforts to atone. Faustus now sees that he is the lone one responsible for his present status. He begins to cuss his life: When I behold the celestial spheres, so I repent And expletive thy, wicked Mephastophilis, Because 1000 hast deprived me of those joys. The debut of the Old Man, is a good illustration of the morality struggle that Faustus is recognizing: Ah stay, good Faustus, remain thy despairing stairss! I see an angel hovers o? er thy caput, And with a vial full of cherished grace Offers to pour the same into thy psyche! Then call for clemency, and avoid desperation. Faustus? reaction to the old adult male? s words, shows his internal battle. Faustus can non take between his inventive construct of himself, which seems to let him the freedom to atone, and the face-to-face more pressing construct of himself, whereby he can non atone. Faustus is torn. Now to the full understanding his destiny, Faustus becomes despairing. The self-revelation of his personal damnation manifests into a hungriness that eats off at his interiors. Faustus abuses his new given cognition. He does non utilize it for good, or use it to anything that would profit world, aching his opportunities of salvation. His concluding damnation non merely consequences from the immoral Acts of the Apostless which he has committed throughout his life, nor his contract with the Satan, but instead it is Faustus? pride that condemns him to eternal snake pit. Faustus? inexorable state of affairs consequences from his ain personal picks made by his ain free will more than anything else. But, true to organize, Faustus would instead retain his pride than admit that he is the 1 at mistake. He blames his parents, his predestination and entreaties to both Christ and Lucifer: # 8230 ; O my Jesus! # 8230 ; O save my Satan! You stars that reined at my birth Now draw up Faustus like a dazed mist # 8230 ; Cursed by the parents that engendered me! Faustus would instead travel to hell and regulation, than travel to heaven and obey God. His deficiency of religion, coupled by his rightful belief that he is excessively great a evildoer to be saved, finish his damnation, destroy his opportunities for salvation, and seal his destiny. In decision, Faustus is far excessively proud a adult male. When given the pick between atoning or maintaining his pride, Faustus unwisely chooses the direct path to hell. It is non due to any peculiar faith or spiritual idea that Faustus died in the terminal. Faustus choose to decease and travel to hell, even though he could hold saved his psyche by the simple act of penitence. Faustus was in control of his concluding fate, but his interior convulsion refused to take penitence as an acceptable option.

Acculturation, Pluralism and Cross-Cultural Awareness in the Classroom Essays

Acculturation, Pluralism and Cross-Cultural Awareness in the Classroom Essays Acculturation, Pluralism and Cross-Cultural Awareness in the Classroom Essay Acculturation, Pluralism and Cross-Cultural Awareness in the Classroom Essay Acculturation, Pluralism and Cross-Cultural Awareness in the Classroom First, acculturation is the process of adopting the dominant group’s cultural patterns; some groups prefer to keep, or maintain the original culture. Consequently that group will not have become highly cultured to American culture. Second, Pluralism ideology believes that they should keep their identity and culture. Such ideas have advantages and disadvantages, because most of the case the dominant groups are not willing to share powers, and Third, cross-cultural awareness in the classroom is critical for nation that is form by diversity groups. The main purpose of this search is to evaluate he advantages and the disadvantages of acculturation, pluralism and cross-cultural awareness in the classroom from different perspectives. The supporters the acculturation usually are the groups from the first generation of immigrants. They keep their identity and cultures. One of the issues of this group is that they never become fully form part of the main stream society. By definition acculturation â€Å"refers to changes to that take place as a result of continuous firsthand contact between individuals of different cultures. Such contact not only produces changes in people’s attitude, values, and behavior, but may also significantly affect their cultural identity. â€Å"It is important to note that acculturation is determined, in part by the individuals or family; that us, they can decide how much they want to dress, speak, and behave like members of the dominant group. According to Rambaut and Portes (2001) â€Å"There are three acculturation patterns among immigrants: consonant, dissonant, and selective. Example of consonant acculturation, parent and children learn the language and culture of the community in which they live. In dissonant acculturation, children learn English and the new culture while parents retain their native language and culture, often leading to conflict within the family and decreasing parenting authority, and fluent bilingualism in the second generation is an outcome of selective acculturation in which the children of immigrants learn the dominant culture and language, but retain significant elements of their native culture. †Donna M. Gollnick, Philip C. Chinn (2006) Multicultural Education in a Pluralistic Society Pg. 29 Newcomers, for example, may have come from relatively homogeneous countries such as Japan, where cultural identity is rarely challenged, and may have had no experiences with the new host culture. † Kenneth Cushner Averil McClelland (2006) Human Diversity In Education Pag. 115. People also differ in the degree to which they wish to retain or are willing to change their cultural identity. Second, pluralism ideology â€Å"allows two or more distinct groups to function separately and equally without requiring any assimilation of one into the other† Donna M. Gollnick , Philip. Chinn (2006 Multicultural Education in a Pluralistic Society) It is the point of view of conservative. Pluralism recognized many ethnic and/or religious groups that could coexist. It has advantage and disadvantages. There are not equitably between the dominant group and the groups who identify themselves with the pluralism. For the two groups to function, it will be necessary that power and resources be shared across those groups. Through the long of the history of this nation those power and resources have been controlled by the dominant group. They will be not very willingly share power and Wealth with others. To attain social and economic mobility, minorities are requiring functioning in the dominant culture rules. For example â€Å"some critics of the system believe that the dominant group uses a strategy of divide and conquer to keep ethnic groups segregated and fighting among themselves for the few resources available â€Å"Donna M. Gollnick, Philip C. Chinn (2006 Multicultural Education in a Pluralistic Society Pg. 32) Other believes in the integration of cultural group and promotion of more equality across groups. It is good intention of those groups, but the reality is totally different. The ideology of the dominant group is why we have to share power and resources if we were the first to establish this nation. This position is not directly open, but it subjective by the attitude that the dominant group have toward minority group. We had experienced the feeling of living in a culture where small groups want to dom inate by force, and elite groups have control over power and the few resources. The advantages of the pluralism call for free choice for individuals as well as groups. The practice of cultural choices allows individuals the right to choose statuses such as gender, ethnicity, and age in determining who they are. Even though, of this supposedly advantages in the United States neither assimilation nor pluralism adequately addresses the diversity that exists. The school should also help all students to develop ethnic literacy, since most American are very ignorant about cultures in the United States others than their own. As educators have to close this gap and teach the students to have more understanding of other different. Third, Cushers and Brislin stated â€Å"that for years researchers from cross- culture psychology have searched for methods that could be used to analyze, understand, improve intercultural interaction. †Knneth Cushner, (2009) Human Diversity in Education Pg. 119. As many analytics suggest, that cross-culture have to be with the recognition that people have similar reactions to their cross-cultural encounters regardless of the setting or the person their own cultural background. I believe that everybody have the same feeling when we have to encounter with unfamiliar situation, or new culture. It is just in the universal approach, but in the school setting Cross-Cultural Awareness have a specific meaning; that we must have to think about if we want to become an efficient educator. We have to become as model for students. Students can learn to understand and appreciate culture groups if the adults and teachers set the right attitude about differences. Another example is many educators are in disadvantage, because they do not live, or have never lived, in the community in which their students live. In my understanding it is not a valid excuse. When we take a teaching position in an area that we are not familiar with; we have to do our researcher about that particular neighborhood. There are various resources useful to acquire knowledge about our diversity in the classroom. For example,† we can learn about the perspective of others by reading articles and books written by men women from different ethnics, racial, social-economic, and religious groups. † Donna, M. Gollinick (2006 education that is multicultural) I think that we as educators, we have to open the windows for more understanding between different cultures that take place in the classroom. It is very important that we are familiar with our students demographic, and social economic backgrounds. Create curriculum having in mind all diversity present in the classroom. Cross-culture awareness is a priority not a choice. It is not only for an individual who wants to become an educator. It is something that helpful in the kind of world that we live. Many people have to leave the country for different motives. When we are willing to accept other and understand others cultures it make our life my easy in unfamiliar environment. Finally, as teachers we need to have understanding of diversity and culture differences. I think that it is easy for educators to say that she /he does not see colors, or ethnic in the classroom. It is just because the person wants to denial cultural differences. These teachers do not share experience with the community where their students lives. It is normal that some people want to maintain they own norms and values. Since other prefer the acculturation because they see more opportunities of with the world of the dominant group. The reality is that if an individual does not want to interact with the others ethnic groups then these persons become insolate. A teacher with understand of the real reality of this nation will celebrate culture differences. I believe that each student I unique entity with her/his talents and difficulty. Battaile D’algiers Position Paper

Battaile D’algiers Position Paper Battaile D’algiers Position Paper One of France’s longest-held overseas territories, Algeria has been thrown into revolt as Algerian nationalists strive for independence. The crucial decolonization effort by the National Liberation Front (FLN) is presently being fought through guerilla warfare between non-French Algerians and the French military. The FLN is the main revolutionary body of Algeria’s nationalist war for independence against France. This party was formed on November 1, 1954 as the merging of several other groups all similarly striving for independence from France. The National Liberation Army (NLA), known as the armed wing of the FLN will serve as the coordinator of the oncoming guerilla operation against the French military and colonists. This guerilla operation will operate as a terror campaign against pieds-noirs civilians, relying on the very belief that sufficiently intense violence will cause French colonists to flee in terror. Nationalist guerillas will specialize in ambushes and nig ht raids, avoiding French firepower in order to compensate for the FLN’s lack of materials and militant force in comparison to the massive French firepower. If the insurrection is not taken seriously enough, then European civilians will be targeted in order to elicit an adverse reaction from the French, which would polarize the Muslim and French communities, converting the insurrection into a nationwide revolution. In order to strengthen the FLN’s efforts against the French, it is possible to seek allies from neighboring Maghreb countries with similar goals for liberation from France such as Morocco and Tunisia. As the revolution progresses, other nationalist groups and leaders have attempted to undermine the efforts of the FLN and continue to do so. A particular rival of the FLN, Messali Hadj, is a nationalist politician dedicated to seeking the independence of Algeria, but seeks revenge for the initiation of the War of Independence without his consult. Hadj has formed the Algerian National Movement (ANM) as an organization designed to counter the efforts of the FLN, and some suspect it is partly financed by France in order to further counteract the FLN. Such rival nationalist organizations pose a significant potential threat to the future of the FLN, considering that the FLN does not have substantial enough support by Algerian civilians. In order to secure the FLN’s political future, rival organization efforts must be vanquished, and the support of the people insured. However,

Abstract The proposed research for this study will discuss the progressive muscle relaxation and its techniques along with the effect that it has on chronic pain in patients with cancer. The techniques discussed can have a significant impact on reducing and relaxing chronic pain in patients with cancer. ... Chronic pain is extremely common in patients with cancer, especially those who are found in stage IV of the disease (Ahles, 2005). Pain can be divided into four types basing on the levels of intensity. These are weak, moderate, sever, and very severe (Godfrey, 2005). All analgesic therapy in cancer patients is based on the use of non-narcotic, narcotic, and support (adjuvant) drugs, the use of which forms the basis of a three-step approach to pain management which was developed and proposed by the world health organization (American Cancer Society, 2006). According to American Cancer Society (2006), one third of all cancer patients suffer from moderate to severe pain related to their cancer and over 50% of patients diagnosed with cancer suffer from some form of pain. The most common types of pain related to cancer are due to the cancer tumor and the treatment (Altice & Jamison, 2009). Unlike those who suffer from chronic pain that is unrelated to cancer, those with cancer experience pain in more than on area. (Melzack (2005) noted that pain can be both acute and chronic and often varies in presentation and that such pains are associated with the consequences of changes in psychosocial relationships, decreased quality of life, and increased rates of depression, as well as in anxiety. However, patients and providers often find that pharmacologic therapy does not completely control pain associated with cancer (Altice & Jamison, 2009). Altice and Jamison (2009) advanced a notion that Pharmacologic management of pain often comes with side effects such as nausea, constipation, drowsiness, pruritus, sedation, and delirium. Altice and Jamison (2009) concluded that complementary and alternative medical (CAM) therapies, including mind-body techniques, are

Aristotle Virtue Ethics Essay Example for Free

Aristotle Virtue Ethics Essay One basic notion in Aristotelian ethics that occupies a central significance is Aristotle’s belief in the role of man’s activities in order for one to acquire ethical knowledge. That is, for one to become virtuous or to obtain virtues one should not merely confine himself to mere studying of these virtues but rather one should, more importantly, actualize this knowledge of the virtues. Thus, for one to become good, one should do good. Aristotle further stretches his ideas by proposing the doctrine of the mean. The essence of this doctrine dwells on the basic precept that one ought to avoid the extremes and, instead, settle for the â€Å"mean†. The actions of men, more specifically, ought to be framed upon the â€Å"mean† which is the virtue. For example, the virtue of courage rests on the mean between two extremes: cowardice or the â€Å"lack† of courage, and rashness or the â€Å"excess† in courage. It can easily be observed that Aristotle suggests that one should live a life that does not border on the things that are on the â€Å"most† and the â€Å"least† levels. For example, if I were to follow Aristotle’s ethics I should always see to it that I should consistently draw myself towards the middle value and avoid slanting towards cowardice and excess. All this could have been very well except for one small thing that I cannot seem to fully comprehend. How is it possible for one to ascertain that one is actually taking the middle path? Or how is it possible for one to know that this or that is the middle value or is the virtuous action? Perhaps the key in having an understanding to the notion of the â€Å"mean† is that one should act. That is, as I continually have these ideas as to what I must do when faced with an ethical situation or, at the least, an ordinary situation, I should nonetheless take the course of action so that I will be able to obtain a qualitative understanding that what I am doing is the â€Å"excess†. On the other hand, I will be having quite a rough time in acquiring the understanding as to whether the action that I am doing is virtuous if all that I do is to theorize and never let my theory be put into practice. Aristotle’s virtue ethics reminds me of Plato’s conception of ethics. For the most part of the Republic, Plato attempts to arrive at a conception of a just life by centering on the notion that the just life or that which is good is better than living a life molded on an evil framework and one which prompts individuals to act in an evil manner. At the onset of the Republic’s Book II, a conception of the idea of â€Å"justice† is advanced as the working of an individual in accordance to the role in which one is best suited as well as the belief for non-interference in the activities of others. In essence, this principle is closely related to Plato’s perspective on acting in accordance to one’s nature or intrinsic being which results to the state or condition of being â€Å"just† or acting justly once the individual acts in line to his very nature. Otherwise, if one begins to act beyond what his nature prescribes, then the individual begins to act in an unjust manner thereby resulting to â€Å"evil† actions (Plato and Kamtekar). While Aristotle insists that one should put into action the thought that one may have so as to have an understanding of the middle value that should be taken, Plato, on the other hand, suggests that one should simply go by with one’s nature so as not to be â€Å"evil†. If I were to choose which ethical precept would be better or would fit me best, I would rather be inclined to adopt Aristotle’s virtue ethics over the other because it offers me a chance to actualize myself through my actions and be guided accordingly. Whereas for Plato, what I am seeing is that I should get to know my self first before I act so that I can be good. But this cannot be met easily essentially because I find it quite difficult to know myself if I would not act first. In the light, if all the students in a certain class would build up a virtue like that of Aristotle’s point of view, the achievement of an environment which is formidably that built on the concept of philosophical and tremendously beneficial notions in life, the attainment of the virtue of goodness is towering in the highest hopes—although it eventually does not also undermine the concept of realism. Apparently, many may not stick on this kind of perception and ought to think that it is certainly not possible to achieve a life which is way beyond the bounds of a â€Å"not-so-good† life for that instance, but with the maximum height of human rationality, such may be given enough credit for the philosophers who believed in a life where â€Å"goodness comes in deeds† (Lannstrom). Sweden’s Position on Personal Privacy in Cyberspace Essay -- Swedish S

Sweden’s Position on Personal Privacy in Cyberspace The Internet and computer age has enabled people to work faster and more efficiently, with practically unlimited access to information. As much as the technology boom has made our lives easier, as with most good inventions, there is some negativity that must be dealt with. The dissemination of information on the global network has put personal privacy at risk. Obviously, we are not going to give up new technologies that enrich human life for the sake of maintaining our privacy; however, measures must be taken to keep the public, or government, from abusing the Internet and computer databases for malevolent reasons. Every country in the world has its own policies on human rights to personal privacy and will deal with the threat the Internet has presented. In this paper, we will explore Swedish laws and regulations and its viewpoint on safekeeping privacy in this Internet age. A recent survey called â€Å"Digital Life Index†, which is conducted year by the Jupiter Research group, concluded that Swedes were the most digital-savvy people amongst 17 Western European countries. This title essentially means that Swedes are more prone to trying out new technologies when they first come out on the market. Swedish households are more likely than their Western European counterparts to own digital handheld gadgets, satellite dishes, mobile phones, and high-speed Internet connections.[1] We can assume that this translates into more time spent using the Internet and transferring information across databases, which requires Sweden to be considerably more conscious of preserving its people privacy. Enron Collapse

What are the main reasons that Enron collapsed? I think the reasons for the collapse are three fold. Firstly Enron’s accounting practices(mark to market accounting- companies estimate how much revenue a deal is going to bring in and state that number in their earnings the moment the contract is signed) Its managements goal was to maintain the appearance of value by always having rising stock prices rather than focus on creating real value for the company.Secondly its reliance on Special Purpose Entities to constantly raise capital without increasing its indebtedness. It allowed losses to be kept off the books while assets to be stated. Enron had its own executives manage these partnerships and would make the deals work by guaranteeing that if whatever they had to sell off declined in value, enron would make up the difference in its own stock. So basically it was selling part of itself to itself. It was these financial bolications to the SPE’s that ended up triggering the collapse. Thirdly its lack of a truly independent auditor to stand up to Enron ultimately caused its downfall. 2. Do you think Enron could have survived? I think if the company had acted internally when Sharon Watkins reported suspicious accounting, and dealt with it internally , Im sure the share prices would have dropped upon reporting of the actual financials but maybe the company could have avoided bankruptcy. 3.Crisis Management Consultant of Arthur Anderson, what would your advice be to the CEO? I think I would have admitted the absurdity of performing both auditing and consulting functions I maybe would have focused on the hiring of of Arthur anderson employees as enron employees, who then managed the affairs of their old colleagues. Ethical lines got blurred. Then use this platform to lead the industry to reforms and act oversear of how to avoid their mistakes and breakdowns of communication within their corporation.

The Meaning of s.t. or Subject To in Economics

In economics, the letters s.t. are used as an abbreviation for the phrases subject to or such that in an equation. The letters s.t. proceed important constraints that the functions must follow. The letters s.t. are generally involved in stating relationships between economic functions using the mathematical functions themselves rather than articulating the same in prose. For example, one a common usage of s.t. in economics may appear  as follows: maxx f(x) s.t. g(x)0 The above expression, when stated in or translated into words, would read: The value of f(x) that is greatest among all those for which the argument x satisfies the constraint that g(x)0. In this example, f() and g() are fixed, possibly known, real-valued functions of x. The Relevance of s.t. in Economics The relevance of the use of the letters s.t. to mean subject to or such that in the study of economics stems from the importance of mathematics and mathematical equations. Economists are generally interested in discovering and examining different types of economic relationships and these relationships can be expressed through functions and mathematical equations. An economic function attempts to define observed relationships in mathematical terms. The function, then, is the mathematical description of the economic relationship in question and the equation is one way of looking at the relationship between concepts, which become the variables of the equation. The variables represent the concepts or items in a relationship that can be quantified, or represented by a number. For instance, two common variables in economic equations are  p  and  q, which generally refer to the price variable and quantity variable respectively. Economic functions  try to explain or describe one of the variables in terms of the other, thus describing one aspect of their relationship to one another. By describing these relationships through mathematics, they become quantifiable and, perhaps most importantly, testable. Though at times, economists prefer to use words to describe economic relationships or behaviors, mathematics has provided the basis for advanced economic theory and even the computer modeling that some modern economists now rely upon in their research. So the  abbreviation s.t. simply provides short-hand for the writing of these equations in place of the written or spoken word to describe the mathematical relationships.

Drivers shouldn’t be able to use phones while driving because it can be extremely hazardous for not only them but their passengers, or others traveling along the same road. The National Safety Council (NSC) is advocating legislation to ban all types of cell phone use on the road, including hands-free usage. Anticipating some of the arguments against cell phone bans, the NSC admits other in-car activities are more dangerous than using cell phones. However, the group says as cell phone use becomes more popular, it has become more dangerous overall. Now, six states have bans on driving while talking on a hand-held cell phone: California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Utah and Washington. It’s also become banned in the District of Columbia, and at least five other states have cities and towns with bans. Protective Value of Estuarine and Coastal Ecosystem

Question: Discuss about the Protective Value of Estuarine and Coastal Ecosystem. Answer: Introduction: Kim operates a bakery which specializes in making different kind of bread and related products such as cakes and pies. The business has been struggling in the recent months and is either making losses or very small profit in last few months. He is of the view that main problem with the business is the pricing of different products. Problem with pricing of different products The major problem for the bakery is to price all the individual products that the company has on offer. Since the resource estimate for each of the products are not well defined, there are chances of over pricing one product and underpricing the other. He determines using his objective thought process what is the probable value of the product and that is how they set the pricing of the product. Kim has identified that there is a need to identify the actual product cost and then put up a margin above it which will insure that not a single product is sold in loss. If this strategy is implemented properly then there wont be any issue with the pricing of the product. It has been seen historically in any business if one can identify the costing of the product in the right manner and is able to charge the mark up on the costing to the customer, the business wont see any losses (Beguera, 2014). Cost Aspects As we can see from the various aspects of costs in the bakery, there are some which qualifies as fixed costs and some which qualifies as Variable costs to the product. The fixed cost is something which is recovered over a period of time, while variable cost of the costs of goods sold need to be recovered in the raw pricing of the product. In this case rent, bakery equipment, insurance policy are fixed costs and that is something which needs to be recovered from the contribution margin (Beguera, 2014). While the other costs such as costs of raw material, electricity, heating, advertisement, and staff cost are variable costs. These set of costs need to be recovered within the pricing. The main difficulty which Kim has in determining the costs are the fact that what cost goes to which product line. As seen in the case Kim has different product lines and hence what aspects of the cost goes to which head is very important to determine. Pricing Model The pricing model in this case which Kim wants to implement is pricing recovery model. Under this model the business intends to recover all aspects of the cost and make sure that all cost heads are built into the price. This kind of model works well into a manufacturing system as each aspect of cost is very well defined. However in case of service of complex inputs into the product it becomes very difficult to determine the exact price of the product. Advice for Kim It is advisable to Kim that he breaks down all fine inputs which goes into final product preparation. This will help in drilling down the exact cost of the product. It is very important that product has all possible inputs on pricing. This is the reason why Kim should work on determining all critical aspects of the business and then map out which resource is going into which production unit. This will finally help in mapping all aspects of the business and then do proper costing exercise. Budgeting is one of the most critical exercise and it is very important that all organizations adhere to it in all possible details. This is one annual exercise which if performed in details helps out individuals in meeting all requirements of the organization. Budgeting tends to become the benchmark for an organization to follow. Budgeting is a very important process in the whole business system. The budgets are generally created at the start of financial year or may be at the end of the previous financial year. Lot of historic information is used and then the same is mapped on the current market situation. Budgets stand to become the benchmark which the business need to follow throughout the year and report to the management of the company. The budgets are generally approved by the board of the company and are used to compare the actual performance of the company vis--vis the budget. The performance assessment of the business involves lot of analysis and one should see what are the possible targets or benchmark with which one compares the actual numbers. In preparation of the budget all targets that the business wants to achieve or can achieve are built into the budget. This is then used actively by the business and then the same is mapped with all other aspects of the business. It is expected that from any business house that they will detail out all aspects of the business in the form of numbers. This numbers are driven by different business function heads who articulate the expected revenue numbers. This revenue numbers are function of business situation, historical revenue numbers, market share of the business and the possible strategy and the resultant growth in the coming year. The modern day businesses thrives on the budget and the management derives lot of its strategy based on the budget. The budgeting numbers help in distributing targets to the line manager. The line manager then tends to take it to the whole sales team who are responsible for actua l sales. On the other side there are people involved who are responsible for proper cost management. The expenses of the company ideally should not cross the budgeted figures. This is where people who are responsible for expenses need to monitor using the budget all the expenses. Any variances that can occur under this category now need to be reported and approved by the management. The budget tends to a good benchmark vis--vis which business compares itself. All the variances whether revenue or expenses need to be reported to the management who will then explain it to the board. The variance tracking in businesses vis--vis the budget is a very important activity across business houses. The reason for the same is the fact that it helps the business maintain checks and control over its performances and take corrective actions if any. Let us see with an example on how a typical company might consider few business decisions before making a budget. Some of the key initiatives planned for Company X for Jan17 Mar18 are and change management procedure may be considered for these: Marketing target US market; Delivery strategy to address global clients other MCO Covance shall have clarity once we have the marketing strategy in place; Upgradation of Product to cloud-based version available across devices with added functionalities; Encryption of web-hosted db (client data) for website; Migration to HRMS cloud-based solution ongoing process of evaluation of vendors from the functional and infosec perspective; Implementation of a Learning Mgmt Solution for measuring training effectiveness; Migration to INDas for A/c (external change); Implementation of GST (external change); Enhancement of BCP capabilities to include scenario of primary site server shared drive not accessible for processes run on ICRON network; Capabilities to operate seamlessly as a multi-locational unit with possibility of setting up a small delivery centre in another city; Adoption of new technologies like visualization ..; Migration to ISO 9001:2015. So this typical business house need to consider all this inputs as broader perspective before taking a budgeting call. As we can see company intend to take some new expenses in the coming year for better revenue flow, this is where the costing teams need to incorporate all possible expenses and cash outflow from the company. We have now been able to see why budgeting is so important and why all critical inputs totally add up to a lot when making a budget. References: Beguera, S., Leandri, M. and Campos, P., 2014, May. The Red Scare Essays (1992 words) - Poetry By Edgar Allan Poe

The Red Scare Many people label Edgar Allen Poe a horror writer, plain and simple others refer to Poe as the father of the detective story, but over all he?s one Americas greatest writers. His ability of expressing the world in gothic ways, really captures the reader?s attention. Even though he lead a tough life and was known as a sadistic drug addict and alcoholic, he still managed to produce great pieces of literature. Three of his greatest works were The Tell Tale heart, The Fall of the House Usher, and The Raven. All of these are very known troughout the world and are considered three of Poe?s greatest pieces. He was born in Boston on January 19, 1809, his parents, regular members of Federal street theater, named him Edgar Poe. Shortly before his mother's death in Richmond, Virginia on December 8, 1811, his father abandoned the family. John Allen, a wealthy tobacco merchant in Richmond, brought Poe into the family (at his wife's request), and gave him the middle name Allen as a baptismal name, though he never formally adopted him. Even though Allen?s treatment toward Poe is not exactly known, we know that Allen never treated Poe with sensitivity. In 1815, the Allen family moved to England on business. There, Poe entered the Manor-House School in Stoke-Newington, a London suburb. This school taught him the gothic architecture and historical landscape of the region made a deep imprint on his youthful imagination, which would effect his adult writings (Levin, 14). The Allens left England in June 1820, and arrived in Richmond on August 2. Here, Poe entered the English and Classical School of J oseph H. Clarke, a graduate of Trinity College in Dublin. On February 14, 1826, Poe entered the University of Virginia. Though he spent more time gambling and drinking than studying, he won top honors in French and Latin. On May 26, 1827, Poe enlisted in the US Army under the name Edgar A. Perry. He joined Battery H of the 1st Artillery, then stationed at Fort Independence. While Poe served there, Calvin F.S. Thomas printed Poe's first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems, a slim volume, which failed to earn any fame or money. Poe then visited Baltimore, and arranged for the printing of another slim volume, entitled Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems. Then, Allen obtained an appointment for him as a cadet, so on July 1, 1830 he entered West Point Military Academy, making his residence at No. 28 in the South Barracks. Poe's military career, however, flopped. After his dismissal, he published a third volume of poetry, this one dedicated to the US Corps of Cadets, for he had taken a subscription from them to raise funds. He then settled in Baltimore with his impoverished aunt, Maria Clemm, her daughter, Virgina Clemm, and his older brother, William Henry Leonard. He tried looking for work as a teacher in B altimore, but another person got the job and Thomas Willis White hired him as an editor at The Southern Literary Messenger, in which he published short stories, poems, and ascorbic literary reviews. In October, the Clemms joined him, and in May he married his cousin Virginia. The rest of his life, Poe suffered from severe mental depression and declining physical health. In 1838, he published his only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym. In December, 1839, he lost his job because of the intense rumors of his excessive drinking habits. By late 1846, financial woes and Poe's own continuing decline ended the magazine (Levin, 18). In January 1847, his wife died in their cottage at Fordham. This made his poverty and instability worst. He continued to write, and engaged in unsuccessful publishing schemes and romances, until, on October 3, 1849, Joseph W. Walker found him unconscious, (thought to be intoxicated) in the street. Poe remained hospitalized, oscillating between a somatic state and violent delirium, until his death at 5 am on the 7th of 1849. Poe's literature hardly relates to the harsh realities of 19th century life. The dark, chaotic, romantic worlds he created represent an escape from the real, unromantic miseries of life to a place where miseries become grand, beautiful things. The story The Tell Tale

It has been estimated that from seventh to 12 the grade, the average adolescent spends over two hours per day listening to music.By looking at the extent of the music consumption in the lives of adolescents, it is readily apparent that music plays an important part in their lives (North, Harvested ONeill, 2000). Music holds the power to influence many aspects of adolescents lives, both positively and negatively. It can relax or energize the body, influence cognitive development, enhance self-healing, and foster both comfort and discomfort (Essence Berger, 2006). In this paper, we will look at the effects that music can have on developing adolescent lives, socially, emotionally, and cognitively. There are many ways in which music plays an important role in the social development of adolescents. According touchstone and Katz (Bibb music has important outcomes for the their colonization, because music and peer affiliations provide adolescents with escalating social opportunities and relationships. This preferred music of peers who are admired at this time, whether for sound or travel reason, is likely to become the affiliating party choice (as cited in Miranda Class, 2009). Simon Firth (1987) acknowledges teenage identify formation as one of the main social functions of their music (as cited in Campbell et al, 2007).Teens fill their lives with music, gather around it, talk about it, all in a spirit of sociability. High schools bear witness to many cliques who mark themselves by their music and provide a way for adolescents to identify with oth ers, in their process of solidification (Despond, 1987). Many books and articles have been written suggesting that sub-cultures form around different genres of pop-music. One factor that motivates adolescents to listen to music, are the benefits It brings with a sense of belonging with peers (North Harvested, 1999).Music can help dollish boundaries between those of different ethnic, or social backgrounds. (Campbell et al, 2007) One 13 year old said hat music gave her a sense of a having a place to belong, both inside and outside the walls of school. Once a group focuses on a particular style of music, its members benefit, as they have defined themselves as part of a cultural elite, and attain the emotional gratifications of belonging. (Zillion Gang) page 60 of Social Physiology of Music Edited by Harvested North.. One possible reason that adolescents might gravitate to particular styles of music, is as a means of helping them to define their own identities. A preference for a certain style of music can carry a message to other adolescents, in regards to where they think they belong with their personal attitudes, characteristics and values. Studies show that adolescents use their music preferences as a way of telling others about themselves (North Harvested, 1999). Rock music Is often a natural target of Interest for adolescents, and one reason may be that it can open the exploration of emerging sexual thoughts and feelings. The create state of mind in which fantasy and ones own body Join together (Terror, 2001). Teens listen to music that their friends listen to, form bonds or social groups with people they want to belong with, so musical preferences become a sense of belonging for both personal and group identity (Levities, 2006). Brown Klutz (2003) found that in adolescence, social identity and relationships undergo tremendous changes, as the teen shifts their relationship from parents to peers (as cited in Miranda Grandeur, 2011). There is a link between this transitional time an adolescent is going through of parental protection to independence, and their desire for seeking and Joining a preference culture that serves as a connection to their maturity (Zillion Gang). According to Larson Ekberg (1995), music can form an Important part of the adolescent emerging from the cocoon of familial identity (as cited in Campbell et al 2007). This function of breaking away from parents, is found in some genres of music that include lyrics that express defiance of those who are perceived to control the lives of adolescents. Zillion Gang). According to Bleach, Zillion Weaver (1991), some studies indicate that teens who listen to certain rebellious forms of music such as heavy metal or rap, may also be more likely to engage in delinquent behaviors (as cited in North Harvested, 1999). In other instances, music has also been shown to promote family bonding and communication between adolescents and parents (Miranda Gaudi er, 2010). Music can also play an important role in the emotional development of adolescents. Ere power of music to evoke emotions is evident in advertisements, movies, and mothers.Music can affect adolescents emotionally at a level deeper than is possible Ninth words alone (Terror, 2001). It is used to manipulate our emotions to deeper levels because the emotions we experience in response to music take part in the cortex; the heart of emotional processing (Levities, 2006). Music can evoke both relaxation or stimulation and can also open up channels of self-expression. For the teenager this can provide a means of coping with powerful emotions and fantasies during this critical period of development. For some adolescents it can create a feeling of safety, Inhere they feel free to express feelings. It enables them to connect with, and share feelings of love, longing, anger, sadness, rage, grief, longing, as well as to experience both closeness and isolation. It can give shelter to the distressed and confused adolescent. This process of expressing emotions with music, can help the adolescent o transition from childhood gratification to work on changes and dreams connected Ninth adolescence (Terror, 2001).Self-esteem is an important part of an adolescents development and the emotional support and social approval from others can influence a childs self esteem (Contracts, MacKenzie-Rivers, Malison, Lung, (2011). Studies show that adolescents preferences of music reflected an attempt to match their own self concept, with perceptions of the people who typically listen to that style. Higher levels of self esteem were also noted to be associated with adolescents identifying themselves ore strongly with a particular musical sub culture (North Harvested, 1999).Studies have shown that music can be associated with mental health issues in suicide, self harm, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, and recklessness (Eking, rapacious, Topology, Subconsc ious, Barker, 2012). However, there is a bidirectional relationship between music preferences and mental health issues. While preference for certain types of music may be red flags for mental health problems, it may also be true that preferring these music types reflects the real cause of the problems (Eking et al). For instance, there has been much controversy over the influence of heavy metal music and teenage suicide.A couple decades ago, two famous heavy metal bands were unsuccessfully sued by the parents of suicide dictum adolescents, because their music was being played while the adolescents died. Seeking et al) Studies indicate that preference for heavy metal music among adolescents may be a red flag for increased suicidal vulnerability, but the results also confirm that the characteristics of adolescents play a more important role as risk factors to suicidal behaviors, than their musical preference (Shell Westfield, 999).In one study, heavy metal music listeners were found to have a significant increase in positive attitude after listening to the music they prefer (Eking et al, 2012). Other studies confirmed that, for the majority of teenagers, listening to all genres of music has a positive effect on mood (Shell Westfield,1999). Music techniques have also been shown to be an effective method of treating adolescent mental health issues, because an adolescents life is in many ways, centered around and heavily influenced by music (Davis, Hendricks, Robinson Bradley 1999). There re also many ways in which music plays an important role in the cognitive development of adolescents. According to Arent Larson (1995), music has been found to provide adolescents with a medium which to construct, negotiate and modify aspects of their personal identity, offering them a range of strategies for knowing themselves and connecting with others (as cited in Campbell et al, 2007). It is in the adolescent years, that one begins to discover that there exists a world of different ideas, different cultures and different ideas (Levities, 2006).Students claimed hat they were not only intrigued by, but also thought it was important to know music as a means of understanding other civilizations, musics role in history, or stories of composers and performers. Music was described as an asset to shaping the broader sense of themselves, and how they might use what they know to be successful in the Nor (Campbell et al, 2007). It has been shown that musical activity involves nearly every region of the brain that En know about. Therefore, it should be no surprise that music might enhance reasoning, motor functions, computation, auditory discernment, and coordination in adolescents lives (Hellenic, 2010). Studies have shown that the brain that is engaged in music undergoes neurological changes, and the findings suggest that music stimulates complex cognitive processes (That, 2008). The adolescence brain is forming new connections at an explosive rate, and this applies to the music heard and performed; new music connects other parts of the brain to what we were listening to during this critical period (Levities, 2006).It is interesting to note that deteriorates, many of these elderly people can still remember the songs they heard En they were fourteen! It has been observed that the reason the brain remembers this, is that our teenage years were filled with many new emotional components and our magical and neurotransmitters acted to tag these memories (Levities, 2006). According to Gigged et al (as cited in Hellenic, 2010), adolescence is a period of synaptic pruning that strengthens the connections that are used more frequently and eliminates the ones that are not; this is influenced by things in which the adolescent participates.Chemistry Holland claim that both musical and mathematical processing access those synapses. So, the individual who is practicing USIA is also strengthening the neural connections that control mathematical reasoning (as cited in Hellenic, 2010). Formal music instruction during ones middle school years, indicates additional educational benefits for achievement in other academic areas, particularly in mathematics. Adolescence psychogenesis might present a window of opportunity during middle school for music to create and strengthen enduring neural connections in those regions (Hellenic, 2010).Barr and Christensen have noted that learning to read music involves manipulating patterns and symbols, which are fundamental concepts in algebra. If music and mathematics utilize the same general cortical areas, then the practice of one should influence the other (as cited in Hellenic, 2010). That could explain why the music instruction seems to enhance achievement in other areas such as math. According to Moran 2004), music teachers also assert that studying music fosters creativity, diverse thinking, and problem-solving skills (as cited in Hellenic, 2010).Based on the above studies and contemplations, I conclude that music can have a significant impact on social, cognitive and emotion development of an adolescents fife. So, how can this information be applied to the paraprofessional position of a teac hers assistant in the school system? A teachers assistant can be aware of the role and the effects that music can play in a students life and use it in several ways. Ay showing an interest in what kind of music a teenage student likes, it can communicate to the student an interest in their lives and help build a rapport with them.
